Make no mistake…
I have a friend who “used to” smoke a lot of weed. She recently stopped smoking it and felt confident enough in her sobriety to ask me a question that had been plaguing her for some time now. It went a little something like this…
Friend: I figured if anyone would know it’d be you but I couldn’t ask you while I was still smoking you wouldn’t take me seriously.
Me: Ok.
Friend: What is the internet and who controls it?
Me: Huh?
Friend: I mean like who controls it. It seems like it comes from now where and it’s just there. One day there was just an internet, nobody thought of it or anything. And anyone can just transmit on it from space. I don’t believe in aliens but who else could control the internet. I mean it’s the world wide web…world wide man.
Me: Are you high?
Friend: I quit I swear! It just doesn’t make sense to me…
Me: Ok…well…umm first off someone did invent it. I’m sure I actually knew the name at some point but it didn’t just come from no where. I won’t start getting into network protocols or anything like that but just know that everything that is on there exists somewhere physically. There’s a bunch of servers…or huge computers somewhere holding information. The only thing controlled about the internet are domain names and that’s just to ensure there’s nothing repeated. Got it? And seriously…are you high?
15 minutes, a few laughs and another accusation later it still didn’t make any sense to her…even my cell phone, radio wave analogies didn’t help. Actually that just made her want to stop using phones and listening to the radio too. So for all you out there that think weed doesn’t kill make no mistake about it, it does kill…brain cells…much needed brain cells. Don’t get me wrong I’m not knocking her favorite hobby, it’s just well when it gets to the point that you question things like this even when you’re off the stuff then you probably smoke way too much. Aliens, though? LOL!
